Sharon Stone's Legal Instinct

Sharon Stone's basic instinct may take her to the courtroom.

The blonde bombshell, who single-handedly boosted sales of ice picks more than a decade ago as a sociopath temptress in the sexy thriller, is being tempted by überproducer David E. Kelley to appear on The Practice, according to Daily Variety.

Kelley initially tried to lure Stone to commit to a full-time gig on the ABC legal drama to fill the void left by the exit of six core cast members, including stars Dylan McDermott and Lara Flynn Boyle, who were dismissed by Kelley last month.

However, Variety reports that Stone only wants a sliver, and she is currently mulling over guest-starring in a three-episode arc that could happen early next season.

A rep for David E. Kelley Productions and Stone's publicist had no comment on the story.

If the onetime Oscar nominee does sign on to The Practice, she might be trading lines with veteran character actor James Spader, who is also in final talks to come aboard the legal drama in the role of an ethically challenged lawyer.

Kelley & Co. are also said to be wooing actress Rhona Mitra (Sweet Home Alabama, The Life of David Gale) to the firm, though neither ABC nor Kelley would confirm.

The new hires would help balance out the loss of key players McDermott, Boyle, Kelli Williams, Lisa Gay Hamilton, Chyler Leigh and Marla Sokoloff, all of whom were axed to keep production costs down.

For Stone, The Practice may be just what the doctor ordered after her career was sidelined following surgery two years ago to treat a brain hemorrhage. With the exception of some TV narration work last year and two relatively unknown flicks in 2000, Picking Up the Pieces with Woody Allen and Beautiful Joe, that garnered only overseas releases, the 45-year-old thespian hasn't been seen in a high-profile flick since 1999's Albert Brooks comedy The Muse. Talks to star in a sequel to Basic Instinct fell apart two years ago, leading Stone to sue producers. Stone's name was also recently mentioned in connection with a TV biopic on Hillary Clinton, but the actress' rep downplayed the reports.

In the meantime, Stone has kept busy by getting involved in charity groups in San Francisco, where she lives with San Francisco Chronicle editor Phil Bronstein and the couple's three-year-old adopted son.
